These Lavender Orpingtons are an English variety and are larger than the American varieties and have a definite rounded body shape. Both sexes exhibit a uniform lavender plumage. These Lavenders are a rare variety and not yet recognized by the APA.

Orpingtons originated in England where they took grand prize at their first showing in the 1866 Crystal Palace Poultry Show. Their popularity continues today for they are a good dual purpose bird and have an extremely docile disposition.

The breed is cold hardy with a full and fluffy plumage. However, the fluff also allows rain penetration so shelter is required. It is this fluff too which also gives them their larger appearance.

Orpingtons are fair layers of medium to large sized light brown eggs and will produce through the winter months. However they do have a tendency to go broody - making good mothers when they do. Therefore these are best suited for those interested in them for their uniqueness rather than egg production or where the egg layer is also going to be the pet and a mellow disposition is desired.

Where ever you keep them, they are sure to be noticed and become
a topic of discussion.
