The Caramel Queen is a rare hybrid sex-link produced by crossing a Light Sussex hen and a Welsummer rooster.

As a sex-link, gender of a chick is easily identified as it correlates to their color. In this case males are yellow and females are brown. For this reason we are able to guarantee 100% sexing accuracy.

Pullets develop a plumage of various red auburn tones with varying random black accents throughout. They are good producers of modest sized eggs of a reddish brown (terra cotta) color. These pullets represent a combining of the good lay qualities of the Sussex with the darker egg color of a Welsummer.

Both sexes inherit a friendly Sussex temperament but are notably more
active with a propensity to explore. This makes them excellent foragers while reliably returning to roost.
While we also offer the cockerels (males) for sale, you should be aware these males are a lighter weight than is generally acceptable and practical for meat production.

The Caramel Queen should not be confused with the Cinnamon Queen or  Golden Comet neither of which use the Welsummer and both of which use a Rhode Island stock.
